The Happily Married Golfer

Recently, a good friend asked me for some advice on how to manage being a golf addict while also being a husband and father. There is no “one size fits all” solution, but I do believe in a few simple deeds that can help any die hard golfer stay married. For starters, it’s critical that you take time each and every day to tell your wife how much you love her. For me, I try to do this at least ten times a day — which isn’t hard because it’s my favorite thing to profess. Second, I believe it’s important to share the game I adore with the people I love. My most special moments on the golf course are when I’m with my wife and daughter in the evenings — we make memories there that will forever fill me with joy. Finally, I have found that being gracious and thankful to my spouse for every chance I get to spend time on the golf course is imperative to keeping our relationship strong. Every minute I get to play golf is one she is being an incredible partner to me. I remember when we first began to date and I confessed my golfing passions. She likely didn’t know what she was in for, but because she loves me she supports my passions just as I try to do the same for her. Relationships are a two way street and in order to keep a loving one alive both parties have to give a lot. When golf is added to the equation it can make that complicated at times. I’m amazingly blessed to have a loving wife who inspires me to chase my dreams and supports those pursuits on a daily basis. In closing, the best advice I can give is to marry someone who you want to share a life with and for whom you can’t imagine surviving without. If you have those things the rest will work out pretty well. That has worked for me and @sarah_revell quite well and after five years of marriage I still am overwhelmed by her beauty, charm, and love each day. Happy anniversary my love. Thanks for being my rock and giving me hope no matter the ride we are on.

Somewhere Between Glory and Despair

The difference between glory and despair is often marginal. The fate of a shot is decided in just a moment. With a breath being held and the ball falling slowly from the sky it becomes apparent that the result is uncertain. Watching closely, the golfer keenly focuses on every factor affecting the ball’s flight — wind, humidity, and temperature along with trajectory and velocity all combine at once. These details are rapidly considered in the brief amount of time that a shot is underway. Hope isn’t enough to overcome a slight miss though. Even the smallest observation as a shot takes off can tell the ball-striker what their fate is. Some body English is added as a desperate final push, but those needed inches won’t quite come. The undesirable image of a shot that has fallen just short is a devastating blow. Like a misjudged rocket launch, the results seem catastrophic. The only solace from this outcome is knowing that the risk was worth taking. Those thrilling seconds are what make a golfer feel alive and that’s why the game is played. Another opportunity will surely come again.

Straight To the Course

Is there anything more exciting then an early morning tee time? Rising anticipation makes it hard to sleep the night before. Springing from bed, it’s tempting to go straight to the course in pajamas. The glistening dew on the ground and pungent smell of fresh cut grass are like sirens that lure the golfer into another adventurous round. The rising sun provides a warm and familiar environment which every addicted golfer longs to revisit daily. The opportunity to fulfill that desire is incredibly hard to resist. Golfers habitually seek the dopamine rush which comes from striking the first tee shot of the day. The closer that feeling comes to dawn the more intense it’s affect. Golfers jump at the chance to play the game they love. What a treat to start a day in the bliss of such a wonderful game.

The Peaceful Nature of Golf

Golf is a game populated by simple truths. I find great peace in that. When my world is filled with challenges and life puts me in a bind, I go to the golf course as a means of lifting my spirit. The uncomplicated nature of the game yields a deep sense of calmness in me. There just isn’t that much to figure out here. Throughout my whole existence, it has been the golf course where I am most myself. Shedding my worries and collecting my feelings — a walk down the fairway brings me back to center. The ups and downs of golf have little consequence beyond the confines of the course. Meanwhile, golf is the only place I can temporarily shelve the up and downs of life. The difficulties of my day to day are not to be ignored, but the setting golf provides at least allows me to diffuse the harmful nature of them. In pursuit of a little ball, I am made free from the worst of my thoughts. The walk brings me clarity too. An attempt to score leaves no room for other problems. I get to rest my mind here. Golf gives me an arena where everything just makes sense. For this, I am truly blessed.

Aerification Season

Summer is the season of aerification. Small holes are punched into beautiful putting surfaces as a means of beneficial destruction. The roots need room to grow! Despite the disappointment from every golfer who hears this procedure has happened at their favorite course, this process is a necessary evil. These Swiss cheese greens may be unsavory in the short term, but the measures taken by the agronomy crew will yield a rewarding experience in the months ahead. The layers of sand deposited on the greens are also inconvenient to good putting, but the bumpy three footer today will soon yield to a smooth rolling paradise. With fast growing grasses the healing process is not so long. The holes will soon recover and the quality of the course will only improve. This status is far from ideal in the short term, but the resulting conditions will bring a smile to many a golfer. Although reviled by everyone who plays the game, the greens getting punched is the secret to happy customers later in the year. What we suffer through today will be celebrated in good time. We should salute the sand filled holes and cheer the inconsistent rolls! They are but a temporary pain.

The Wisdom of Gramps

My Grandfather is old school. His golf philosophies don’t pair so well with those who subscribe to the game’s modern approach. Gramps believes more in “effortless power” than a “powerful effort.” This way of swinging the club has suited him well in his life. In over eight decades of playing the game, he’s mastered his move through a constant dedication to golf. He still values accuracy over length and artistry to strength. Gramps sees the swing path as the key to shaping shots — something he still does well even at 86. He has never been much for flash because he knows the steady horse wins the race. Hitting fairways and greens is the secret. That is achieved by repetition. When Gramps plays, the strategies he pursues are consistent with his teachings. A smooth swing and good ball striking can yield low scores. If it can still work for him, imagine what it can do for others who love to play. A round with Gramps is a study in the classical theories of golf. There is much to learn from his wisdom. I still benefit from every lesson.

Chasing a Golf Dream

Dreams are a funny thing. They start out small and when given time, grow to fascinating heights. I’ve always loved to write — an infatuation that has yielded great results in my career, but not something I used to explore other joys in my life. Yet, in recent years, that craft began to intertwine with my passion for golf. Strange and beautiful things can happen when trained skills meet soulful obsessions. Not knowing where that collision would lead, I started to put my thoughts about golf to paper. The result has been various essays, musings, and other contemplations on the game. Those words have lead to all sorts of new friendships, opportunities, and beginnings. The composition of my golfing epiphanies have helped me discover the depths of this most wonderful sport. This practice has also lead to new learnings about my own spirit. Now, that journey has manifested in a collection of my favorite works. It’s a book. A manifesto of sorts. A deceleration of my intentions and beliefs. I call it The Nine Virtues of Golf. It’s my golf story which also happens to be the story of my life. My most sincere hope for which, is to build further connections with my fellow golfer. My book is intended to be a bridge — one uniting me with the game and the millions of people who play it. If this crazy idea works, then perhaps it will lead me to more places and more people who embody the true nature of golf. With a full heart and fulfilled dream, I aim to keep up my writing pursuits. Who knows where they will take me next. Ideally, it will be to fairways near and far with folks like you.

Who Cares About the Weather?

When the clouds gather and the wind rises, light hearted golfers go home. But not the die hards. Those truly committed to the game simply slap on their rain gear and play on. The conditions of nature are not an excuse to go inside. They are instead an invitation to test your skills. In golf’s motherland, weather is essential to this sport — it makes for a valiant pursuit. Varied forecasts are an opportunity to experience golfing environs in new ways. When precipitation is present and the gusts begin to blow, those who are most in love with golf prepare to go out again. Somewhere beneath a pulled down cap, drenched by rain and challenged by the game, lies the sly smile and warmed heart of a golfer in their element. There are no stoppages here.

The Thrill of Golf

A round of golf is a series of thrilling moments strung together through a long walk. The most exciting of which are found on courses that keep you guessing. This game is intended to be an adventure. Thrills can come from bold tee shots and daring escapes. A well struck approach, holed chip, or sidewinding putt can stir the blood as well. These are the sort of shots that make golf worth playing. Because the game is hard, it is also compelling. The golfers ability to overcome difficulties on the course is what makes the sport so addicting. Golf is a lifelong chase for fleeting thrills — a worthy pursuit for the sporting soul.
